We would like to introduce you to Prof. Beatrice Heuser’s upcoming course through her new book Flawed Strategy: Why Smart Leaders Make Bad Decisions. At its core, Flawed Strategy addresses a fundamental question: why do intelligent, well-informed leaders nevertheless make poor decisions in times of war and crisis?
Prof. Heuser does not seek to propose a new grand theory of international relations. Instead, she demonstrates why many of our established ways of thinking about strategy can be misleading. Policymakers often have only a limited understanding of the broader geopolitical landscape and may be more focused on defeating external challenges than on understanding or accommodating them. At the same time, their decisions are shaped and constrained by institutional limitations, bureaucratic dysfunction, and deeply rooted cultural biases.
